Why easy running still feels hard
A slower pace can still feel like work. I’m learning to notice the difference.
I spent a long time reading about easy running before I really did it. Zone 2, conversational pace, heart-rate drift — my brain collected the vocabulary much faster than my legs collected the habit.
The confusing part is that easy running is not always easy. I can slow down and still feel like I am doing something difficult. Sometimes the right adjustment is an even slower pace. Sometimes it is a short walk. Neither one feels particularly impressive, which is probably why my ego keeps trying to negotiate.
What has changed recently is less about the numbers and more about the feeling after a run. The run may still be technically uncomfortable, but it feels less like a test. I notice my breathing, the rhythm of my feet, the weather, and the fact that I actually came back to do it again.
I still look at heart rate because it gives me a useful hint. I just don’t want it to become a grade. For now, an easy run is one I can finish without turning the next run into a punishment or a recovery project.
